How many times have you had to take breaks from your computer work (or games!) because your eyes just wouldn't hold up? No matter how hard you try to keep at it, you just have to give in and step away from that screen. Maybe your eyes burn or itch. Maybe they get weak and blurry. Perhaps they're simply just tired. Whatever the case, there are natural ways to rejuvenate and relieve your overworked eyes and help you stay at the computer longer. It may seem too good to be true - after all, most things are, right? That isn't the case here, though. There are a variety of alternative remedies and recipes that can soothe your tired eyes and give them a real treat! The good news is that they are pretty simple and inexpensive to try. You have to love it when you can try something for only a few dollars. If it doesn't work out, you've only lost a few dollars and a few minutes of your time, right? So, what am I raving about? Ok, I suppose I could let you in on my secrets. I'm a freelance writer and blogger, so I have to keep my eyes healthy and at their best. I do this on a frugal budget, successfully. Do these recipes call for a lot of expensive ingredients? Nope. Do you need fancy tools or loads of time? Nope. So, what do I use? Well, today I'm sharing with you two of my favorite recipes which call for one cucumber or a couple of organic chamomile tea bags. Doesn't sound like a cucumber or tea bag could soothe your hurting eyes, does it? Well, not only can they work they do work (for me).

Tired Eyes Relief, Naturally!

Here's how…

1. Frozen Cucumber Slices Trick!

What you'll need:

  • A knife
  • A cucumber
  • Small, snack sized zip lock bags

Directions:

  • Wash and slice cucumber
  • Place the slices in zip lock bags

Tiny Tip:

Make sure you only put a few in each one so they'll lay flat and not freeze all clumped together. (I only put 2 in each small bag at a time and that is for one eye treatment at a time.)

And, that's it! Next time your eyes are burning, itching, and hurting like crazy, just make a short trip to the freezer for one of your bags. You can let them thaw a little. Then, just lean back in a relaxing position and place the slices over your eyes. For added relief, place a cool, folded wash cloth over your eyes as well (the cucumbers will be beneath the wash cloth) and leave them on for 5-15 minutes. You'll love how refreshing the cucumber is to your eyes. It's such a cool, rejuvenating experience!

2. Chamomile Tea Treat

What you’ll need:

  • Organic chamomile tea (bags)
  • Coffee or tea cup – even a small bowl will work
  • Small saucer or lid to cover the tea cup (for steeping)
  • Something to boil water in
  • 1 cup of water

Directions:

  • Place your clean bowl or cup on the counter
  • Put the organic chamomile tea bag in
  • Boil 1 cup of water
  • Pour heated water over tea bag
  • Cover it with the saucer or small lid and let it “steep” for 5-15 minutes
  • Leaning over the sink, cup some of the tea in the palm of your hand and flush your eyes out. You can blink a few times to thoroughly wash the eyes.

Tiny Tip:

You could also run two of the tea bags under cool water or place them in a small container in the fridge with a little water. Use the cool chamomile tea bags to cover your eyes. This helps allergy eyes, swollen eyes, pink eye, etc.

Both the cucumber and chamomile tea have helped my eyes tremendously as I glare at the computer screen day after day, writing and blogging. Do you work on the computer every day, or spend a lot of time gaming? Have you tried either of these natural eye relief remedies? Or, do you know of other ways to relieve tired eyes? Join in the comments and share your eye experiences. I’d love to hear what has worked for you!

Some great tips here! I've also heard that soaking milk in cotton balls and then putting them on your eyes is another way to help with tired eyes. I have tons of other suggestions too - none of which I actually use myself. Typically, I just stop what I am doing and take a nap!

Great tips, Michele! When sitting at the computer for long periods of time it's a really good idea to give yourself a ten minute per hour break as much as possible. Not only will this help with sore eyes but sore wrists as well!

@kohuether - Thanks! Oh, I didn't remember the milk and cotton balls - probably because I don't drink milk! ;-) Yeah, there are so many remedies but I decided to focus on just these two with the cucumber and chamomile. Otherwise, this hub would have been way too long! haha! And, I'm not one that takes naps. :-)

@marleymauve - I'm glad you liked them! Yes, breaks are awesome! It's amazing what a few minutes of resting the eyes, walking around, and/or stretching can do. ;-) Oh, yes, sore rists are an entire different hub/post/article... whatever you want to call it! hehe

Thanks for the comments you all!

@deccasandy - Thank you! Yes, a lot of us are used to staring at the computer screen for long periods of time so it's especially nice to be able to have inexpensive, quick remedies like this that we can try out. I truly love these. My favorite ones are the chamomile tea bags cold (although I do use the warm for the flush) and the cucumbers are really refreshing. Hope you enjoy your experiences!

@betherickson - Thanks so much for the thumbs up! It's great that you enjoyed this hub and are excited about trying the remedies. I look forward to future comments from both of you sharing your opinions on the recipes and how (or if) they helped your eyes. Keep me posted!

It is a good topic. Everyone occasionally loses sleep, and those who are lacking sleep sometimes have puffy, tired looking eyes. Thanks for the tips. I too have some tips.

There is nothing quite like a cool strawberry right from the fridge on a warm summer day. If you have puffy, tired looking eyes, next time you reach for a cold strawberry, grab a couple of extra strawberries for your eyes.

Cold milk tastes great with a big slice of rich chocolate cake, but cold milk is also great for tired, puffy eyes. If you are looking exceptionally tired these days, try a milk treatment that will soothe and relax your eyes.

And there you are again, Matt Ferry! I guess I'll go ahead and spill the beans: When I first saw your comment on one of my Squidoo Lenses, I had tired eyes myself and thought Matthew PERRY had commented on my Lens! Imagine that! Ha! I rubbed my eyes and looked closer and noticed that it was an F in your name and not a P like I originally thought. Oh, I just about passed out from the trauma! hehehe Anyway, you're right about working on the computer! You're most welcome for the tips - and my apologies to you and Nancy for the LONG wait on getting your comments published. They had somehow ended up as spam and I just never knew you'd even left them! Sorry!

Thanks for your comments, both of you. They are much appreciated. :-)

Good tips. How about massaging around the eyes? Perhaps they are better classified as eye exercises. I have used the exercises and found instant relief. Thanks for sharing.
